About CREAF

The Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF) is a public research institution created in 1987 and located in Catalonia. CREAF’s main objective is to generate knowledge and create new methodological tools in the fields of environmental sciences and ecology. CREAF’s activities include research on the function and diversity of natural ecosystems and their response to disturbances; environmental problems that may severely affect the function of ecosystems, such as changes in soil use or atmosphere and climate changes; and the development of conceptual and methodological tools to assist in decision-making and facilitate sustainable management. Its profile matches the tasks in the WeObserve project for their experience in data storage, manipulation and knowledge extraction. It also has substantial involvement in GEO tasks and activities and in the geospatial standards specification.

CREAF is also deeply involved in GEO tasks and activities and in the geospatial standards specification, i.e., leading the GD-06 task on GEOSS non-space based Earth Observation Resources. CREAF and the European Commission co-organized the GEOSS European Project Workshop 7 in Barcelona.

CREAF has great experience in citizen science activities, participating in several European and regional projects, ECSA meetings and conferences, and in the leadership of the OGC Citizen Science Domain Working Group (Citizen Science DWG).

Main Role in the Project

CREAF is mainly leading the links between WeObserve and the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and the Copernicus program, through the development of a pilot to demonstrate the added value of Citizen Observatories (CO). In addition, CREAF will:

  • Contribute to the mapping of the EU landscape of Citizen Observatories
  • Contribute to the development of the Citizen Observatories ‘Cookbook’
  • Promote the WeObserve Communities of Practice (CoPs). CREAF is the leader of one of the three first CoPs, the CoP3, about Interoperability and standards for citizen observatories.
  • Contribute to the development of the WeObserve toolkits and MOOCs and participate in capacity development activities and road shows for uptake of the COs knowledge base
  • Contribute to identify where COs can contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
  • Help to develop the WeObserve Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication Plan and contribute to the knowledge platform
  • Contribute to the hackathon and help to organize the workshops, events and the final WeObserve conference
