About ICCS

The Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (ICCS) is a nonprofit Academic Research body established in 1989 by the Greek Ministry of Education in order to carry out research and development activities in the areas of telecommunications systems and techniques and computer systems, and their applications in a variety of areas such as: transceivers, radar and generally electromagnetic sensors, satellite and wireless communications, electromagnetic phenomena modelling, software and hardware engineering and control systems. The personnel of ICCS consists of academic staff (~80 university professors), 20 senior researchers and more than 500 other researchers (including PhD students) in 20 research laboratories.

ICCS has participated in several EC funded research projects and has been the Coordinating Partner or Dissemination Manager in more than 40 such projects. These include SCENT, SAFERTEC, RANGER, INPREP, SENSKIN (H2020), AUTONET, INTERACTIVE, TEAM, PPDR, INACHUS, RECONASS, ROBINSPECT, MEMSCON, WATERPIPE (FP7), and others. ICCS is the coordinator of SCENT, one of the four Citizen Observatory projects funded under the H2020 SC-5-17-2015 Citizen Observatories call.

ICCS has a technical background in sensor web innovations for environmental monitoring, power-aware and compact sensor devices for flood monitoring, as well as significant expertise in implementing and coordinating dissemination activities including workshop organization, social media for EU projects, scientific dissemination activities, and web portal/platform design.

Main Role in the Project

As leader of WP5, ICCS will lead the development and implementation of the Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication Plan (T5.1). ICCS will also develop the knowledge platform (T5.2), linking this to the Citizen Observatories Portal (www.citizen-obs.eu). Finally, as part of WP5, ICCS will organize the hackathon, workshops, other events as well as the final WeObserve conference (T5.3). As part of other WPs, ICCS will:

  • Contribute to the mapping of the EU landscape of COs (T2.1), the Communities of Practice (CoPs, T2.2)
  • and the development of the CO ‘Cookbook’ (T2.3). ICCS will lead one of the five CoPs.
  • Contribute to the development of the WeObserve toolkits (T3.1) and MOOC (T3.2), and participate in
  • capacity development activities and road shows (T3.3).
  • Help to forge strong links with GEO (T4.1) and the OGC (T4.2), and participate in the Copernicus pilot (T4.3).
